About Us

The Westlawn Inn is a family owned and operated restaurant, bar and live music venue located just one block from the Chesapeake Bay in the charming resort town of North Beach, Maryland. Opened in 2004 in a renovated Arts & Crafts style building that had been a guesthouse for nearly a century, the Westlawn has the look and feel of old-time inn — where the outside world stops and dining becomes a nightly experience to cherish.

Whether you live around the block, or are exploring the Chesapeake’s beautiful Western Shore for the first time, the Westlawn Inn proprietors, Lee and Jan Travers, will welcome you to spend an evening enjoying the critically-acclaimed cocktails, amazing appetizers, scrumptious salads, excellent entrees, delectable desserts, and marvelous music in an inviting interior with a superior staff…which makes for a “practically perfect” evening!

The Beginning

The inspiration to open a restaurant came from Lee’s youth and his family’s business, “Popey’s Tavern” in District Heights, Maryland. After careers in rock n roll and custom home building, he decided to get back into the hospitality industry. Friend and Mayor Mark Frazer recommended that Lee and Jan look to locate in North Beach, which at the time was beginning its revitalization as a shore resort community. That’s when Lee and Jan found a shuttered bed and breakfast in a historic building at Chesapeake Ave. and 7th Street.

“When we bought this building, I immediately saw the possibilities,” Lee recalls. “People would say to me, ‘You’re really going to open a fine dining restaurant in North Beach?’ Yet, with its history and design, the building just called for more of an upscale dining experience.

“We built our business around this building. We’ve created an atmosphere that when you walk in the door, it kind of pulls you in the place. It has the feeling of an old, family run business, and that’s exactly what we are.” 

For Locals and Weary Travelers

In addition to the two dining rooms and the veranda, the Westlawn Inn offers an intimate 15-seat bar where locals and visitors gather to enjoy one of the area’s largest wine selections, beer, fine spirits and the mixed drink creations of Lee and Jan’s son, Will Travers — widely known as one of the Western Shore’s most talented mixologists. The full dinner menu is available at the bar, as well as a small bar menu.

Naturally, all drink selections are also available in the dining areas, where our wait staff can help you pick the exact right match to bring forward the best flavors in our famous filet mignon, sea scallops and other seafood dishes.

“Casually Upscale” Dining 

With its fresh, seasonal dishes, the Westlawn has built a regional reputation for high-quality traditional American fare. Each week, Executive Chef Jason Fletcher hand-selects the meat, fish and produce that will inspire and enliven that week’s dishes. That same level of care goes into food preparation in our kitchen, where each entrée is specially cooked to order.

Jan adds, “We pride ourselves in offering delicious, upscale food, and we have created an atmosphere we can only describe as “casually upscale.” While many guests come to us for an intimate date night or to celebrate a special occasion, we have just as many who visit for a weekday break, a Saturday night out or a Sunday brunch. With our live music, upstairs and downstairs dining rooms, and outdoor veranda seating during the warm months — the Westlawn Inn aims to delight you with each visit.”

Coming Soon

Lee and Jan are very excited to go back to the roots of the Westlawn as a “boarding house” with The Guest Quarters @ The Inn, currently under construction next to the restaurant. This new lodging is designed to provide local and out-of-town guests with the opportunity to fully relax and enjoy everything the Westlawn and North Beach have to offer.

The Guest Quarters has three units on the first floor, and two larger units on the second floor, each with a screened porch reminiscent of the time period in which the Westlawn was built. Lee has designed the new building to reflect the Arts and Crafts style of the restaurant — in a way that enhances the historical charm of this wonderful town.

The Westlawn Inn is proud be part of the rebirth of North Beach as a resort town for visitors from the greater Washington, D.C. metropolitan area and beyond. Known as “The Jewel of the Chesapeake Bay,” North Beach has become a regional destination for shopping, recreation and dining.

Before dining at The Westlawn Inn, visitors can easily spend the afternoon lost in North Beach’s antique shops, fine arts gallery, novelty shops and locally sourced food market. Or, visitors can work up an appetite by walking or biking along the boardwalk for stunning views of the Chesapeake Bay, taking the family to a sandy beach area and fishing pier, or enjoying popular town events like the Friday Night Farmers’ Market and Classic Car Cruise-In.
